Hungry Bear Publishing was founded in 2004 by Andy and Dawn Flynn, of Saranac Lake, N.Y. to publish a compilation of Andy's weekly syndicated newspaper column -- "Adirondack Attic" -- into book format. The "Adirondack Attic" newspaper column ran in several northern New York newspapers from 2003 to 2009. The first book, "New York State's Mountain Heritage: Adirondack Attic, Volume 1," was released in May of that year, and they have produced a total of six books in the Adirondack Attic series.
In 2007, Hungry Bear Publishing added another author to its lineup -- Randy Lewis, of Paul Smiths, N.Y. -- by publishing "Actively Adirondack: Reflections on Mountain Life in the 21st Century." This collection of essays and poems won the People's Choice Award for the Adirondack Center for Writing's 2007 Adirondack Literary Awards. In 2009, the company reprinted "Mostly Spruce and Hemlock," the 1976 classic history of Tupper Lake, N.Y. by Louis J. Simmons. And in 2011, we added one more author to the lineup -- Diane Chase, who wrote "Adirondack Family Time: Tri-Lakes and High Peaks Regions," Your Four-Season Guide to Over 300 Activities (with GPS coordinates).
On Dec. 31, 2007, the Flynns purchased the Meet the Town publication from Alice and Jacques DeMattos, of Saranac Lake. Meet the Town, a community resource guide founded in 1927, featured two editions: Saranac Lake and Lake Placid/Wilmington. The Flynns have since added guides for Tupper Lake/Long Lake/Newcomb, Potsdam and Canton.
In April 2008, Andy received a Certificate of Commendation, Award of Merit, from the Upstate History Alliance (now Museumwise) for the Adirondack Attic History Project, which he founded in 2003 to actively preserve Adirondack history through the written word. By creating a unique partnership with the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake, N.Y., he has generated a collection of about 300 artifact-based, human-interest stories from the museum's collection.
In April 2010, Andy began working with the Adirondack Museum, singer/songwriter Dan Berggren and North Country Public Radio to produce the Adirondack Attic Radio Series, which airs monthly on NCPR.
Hungry Bear Publishing is currently a home-based business. We do not accept submissions for publishing at this time.
In addition to producing books and Meet the Town, Andy travels around the Adirondack region and beyond giving lectures and workshops based on his experience in the self-publishing, history, public relations and tourism industries. He also provides editing/layout services for other publications. Andy's writing has been published in magazines such as Adirondack Life and the New York State Conservationist.
Andy Flynn brings to Hungry Bear Publishing a wealth of knowledge from the journalism, public relations and tourism industries. Dawn Flynn adds even more experience from the publishing industry, having worked for two newspaper chains in the Adirondacks before accepting a position at the Adirondack Bank.
The Flynns live in Saranac Lake. Dawn is a 1979 graduate of the Saranac Lake High School and worked as a senior teller for Adirondack Bank from 1998 to 2008. Andy is a 1987 graduate of the Tupper Lake High School worked as the senior public information specialist at the New York State Adirondack Park Agency Visitor Interpretive Center in Paul Smiths from 2001 to June 2009. Both are veterans of the publishing industry and currently work for themselves. Dawn is the former assistant circulation manager at the Adirondack Daily Enterprise, and Andy is the former managing editor of the Enterprise and Lake Placid News. They met at the Enterprise.
