MUSEUMS

Build your brand. A publicity partnership should be part of your marketing mix.

Step 1: Learn about the Adirondack Attic History Project model.
Step 2: Andy meets museum staff.
Step 3: Andy meets with potential writers/publishers and museum staff.

Your museum can create a long-term publicity partnership with a local author and publisher and
generate thousands of dollars worth of free publicity each year, leading to annual donations to your
artifact collections — all for little time and no money. Sound too good to be true? Not really.

Just ask the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake, N.Y. In 2003, museum curators and author
Andy Flynn created a unique partnership to tell human-interest stories behind the artifacts in the
museum’s collection. Andy’s syndicated column, “Adirondack Attic,” runs in five northern New York
newspapers, featuring an artifact a week. Andy self-publishes a year’s worth of those columns
annually in his book series, New York State’s Mountain Heritage: Adirondack Attic. He has published
five compilations to date. A part of the proceeds from the book sales is donated each year to the
Adirondack Museum’s Collection Improvement Fund to help purchase artifacts. To date, Andy has
given $5,500 in donations. He even volunteers each summer for a Writer-in-Residence program at
the museum and travels around the 6-miilion-acre Adirondack Park teaching people about his work
with the Adirondack Museum — all free publicity. Andy gets access, and the museum gets great publicity.
