PRESS RELEASE
August 20, 2010
LIBRARY TO HOST FIRST-EVER ‘MOSTLY SPRUCE & HEMLOCK’ READING MARATHON
TUPPER LAKE, NY – Goff-Nelson Memorial Library officials today announced that they will host the first-ever “Mostly Spruce and Hemlock” Reading Marathon from 5 a.m. to midnight on Thursday, Sept. 2, 2010.
This community reading event will feature 76 people reading 461 pages for 19 hours, covering the entire volume of “Mostly Spruce and Hemlock,” the popular Tupper Lake history book.
“We have created this event to promote reading and local literature,” said Goff-Nelson Memorial Library Director Linda Auclair. “And we wanted to do it before the snowbirds fly south and students go back to school. This is a great opportunity for kids to brush up on their reading skills before school starts the following week.”
In 2009, Hungry Bear Publishing worked with the Goff-Nelson Memorial Library to reprint “Mostly Spruce and Hemlock,” originally written and published in 1976 by former Free Press Editor and Tupper Lake Historian Louis Simmons. The book details the early days of life in the village of Tupper Lake and the town of Altamont (the town’s name was changed to Tupper Lake in 2004). Histories are offered on the logging industry, railroading, churches, schools, hotels, Sunmount DDSO and businesses such as the Oval Wood Dish Corporation.
The Sept. 2 event is sponsored by the Goff-Nelson Memorial Library and Hungry Bear Publishing. People may read or listen during the marathon, and they can bring their own copies of the book, borrow one from the library, or purchase one from the library ($24.95). Photos from the book will be projected on to a screen during day. Refreshments, including plenty of coffee, will be available. The event is free and open to the public.
Reservations are required to read, and people may sign up by calling the library at (518) 359-9421. Time slots are 15 minutes long, which equates to six pages of reading. Participants will receive an autographed copy of “New York State’s Mountain Heritage: Adirondack Attic, Vol. 5,” written by Tupper Lake native Andy Flynn.
“The reading marathon is a chance for Tupper Lakers to celebrate their rich heritage,” said Flynn, who is the owner/operator of Hungry Bear Publishing, based in Saranac Lake. “Louis Simmons wrote this book for us. It is now our responsibility to share it with the world.”
Although the Reading Marathon will be held from 5 a.m. to midnight, library services will only be available during regular library hours: 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
The Goff-Nelson Memorial Library is located at 41 Lake St. in Tupper Lake. Providing library service to the extended Tupper Lake community, the building includes a children’s room, public access computers, Wi-Fi access, the Grace Simmons Memorial Room, and rotating displays of local art. As a member of the Clinton-Essex-Franklin Library System, the library shares resources through an online library catalog.
